Beverley is a Senior University Teacher, Curriculum Lead and Year in Industry programme lead in the University of
Sheffield’s Department of Mechanical Engineering with a portfolio that spans design, manufacturing and
management. Beverley is an enthusiastic educator, particularly in bringing commercial, social and policy contexts to
engineering questions and she is keen to support this awareness in the SELA programme. She is an experienced
teacher of engineers, social scientists and professionals at FE, undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has active
research interests in interdisciplinary education, engineering capacity and developing the idea of ‘responsibility’ in
science and engineering education.
Before embarking on an academic career, Beverley was a polymer engineer in manufacturing SMEs and a research
engineer at the UK’s National Physical Laboratory before moving into research management, technology transfer
and engineering management at NPL and in industry. She is a Chartered Engineer and Professional Member of the
Institute of Materials, Metals and Mining, has a B.Eng. (Hons) (Loughborough), an MBA (Cranfield), an MA in social
research methods (Nottingham), PhD in Science and Technology Studies (Nottingham) and a Postgraduate
Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education (UCL Institute of Education). Her
academic research has studied public participation in renewable energy technologies and the role of natural
resources in national identity.
