Gary is an experienced educator, recognised for developing and delivering innovative, enterprising learning experiences that challenge students and build technical knowledge whilst enhancing transferable skills. He has particular expertise in authentic learning, building inclusive communities of learning, and supporting student transition into and out of higher education. He also has a strong interest in enhancing learning with technology.
With a background in linguistics, Gary worked for seven years as a University Teacher in linguistics, creating international award-winning learning activities, and receiving recognition through a University of Sheffield Senate Fellowship in 2012, and Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2015.
More recently, Gary transitioned into education development, as Enterprise Education Developer with University of Sheffield Enterprise. He provides professional development support and opportunities for staff across the University, to develop their teaching practice and create learning experiences that challenge students to apply their academic learning in innovative ways, whilst building their skills in enterprise and entrepreneurship.
Gary served on the SELA Operations Board from 2014, before taking up the role of Head of SELA in 2016, with overall responsibility for the strategic development and operation of the programme.
